Descrizione e Attività

Descrizione Generale

The accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plants has highlighted the vulnerability of
nuclear fuels that are stored in spent fuel pools (SFPs) before their evacuation and final disposal or possible reprocessing. In the frame of the SARNET2 FP7 project, several partners have performed simulations of accident scenarios in SFP using different Severe Accident (SA) codes (ASTEC, MELCOR, ATHLET-CD, RELAP/SCDAPSIM, ICARE/CATHARE). The studies have raised questions about the reliability of the results obtained since these codes were developed for reactor applications. One objective of the AIR-SFP project is to assess more precisely the applicability of SA codes to the calculation of transients in SFPs in the frame of a benchmark, including a criticality risk assessment. It will put in light to what extent the SA codes agree or disagree about the behaviour of SFPs in case of loss of cooling or loss of coolant accident.
The second project’s objective is to elaborate a roadmap for further R&D on SFP accidents, both on phenomenology and on applicability of codes. This will include discussions about the use of CFD or system codes to bring elements for recommendations and validation of SA codes, on the basis of the above benchmark outcomes, but also the definition of R&D needs on different topics like largescale flow convection, impact of partial dewatering and impact of air flow on thermal runaway and fuel degradation.
The NUGENIA Executive Committee agreed in November 2014 to give this proposal the NUGENIA
label, recognizing its excellence.

Attività svolta da ENEA

ENEA partecipa alle attività del WP1 (Task 1.1 e Task 1.2) e del WP2:
Partecipazione al benchmark, nel'ambito della Task 1.1 del WP1, con il codice di incidente severo europeo ASTEC, attraverso l'analisi dei due scenari incidentali previsti ed ulteriori studi di sensibilità su parametri di maggiore rilevanza;
