Although in the last decade the European public concern was growing on the potential adverse health effects due to the use of mobile phones, among the studies addressing their potential health effects, no studies investigated the effects on hearing, actually a highly sensitive biological system to exogenous and endogenous agents and the first one to be affected by the microwaves. GUARD is the first study addressing the investigations of the potential adverse effects of GSM mobile phones on hearing and hearing-related cognitive functions. Its results will represent the first international and European statement about this type of hazards for hearing. All the involved laboratories are among the most relevant teams in Europe in their respective areas. The combination of expertise at these levels of quality can be unquestionably considered as the European added value of the consortium.
Attività svolta da ENEA
L'ENEA sarà responsabile dell'esposizione con tempi e dosi diverse a campi elettromagnetici alla frequenza di 900 MHz e 1800 MHz con modulazione GSM dei ratti Sprague Dawley e di sottoporre ad una serie di test audiologici gli animali esposti, di controllo e "sham" al fine di valutare gli eventuali effetti sul sistema uditivo derivanti da tale esposizione, che mimerà quella derivante dall'uso di telefoni cellulari. Dovrà inoltre provvedere alla caratterizzazione dosimetrica dei sistemi espositivi utilizzati nei diversi istituti partecipanti ed a definiti controlli di qualità.
