The rapid development of optical telecommunications fosters a strong demand for inexpensive components for the metropolitan networks. The effort focused on Er-doped planar amplifiers (EDWAs) strives to solve issues related to manufacturing and cost/performance. This proposal aims at providing an innovative material synthesized by viable techniques to increase the optical gain/unit length of Er-doped silica (SO) and specific glass (SG) systems for the realization of high performance EDWAs. An extension to EDFAs (Er-doped fiber amplifiers) will be explored. The approach is co-doping of SO and SG with Er and Si nanocrystals (Si-nc) and stems from the observation of a strong enhancement (greater than 100) in the intensity of the 1.54 ?m emission of Er3+ when Er coexists with Si-nc in the dielectric host. A planar packaged device of 20 dB gain (less than 5 cm in length) is expected to be produced at a cost less than 1200 euro. SINERGIA intends to realize a small-size, highly performing and low cost waveguide amplifier (WA) from silica or other specific glass co-doped with Er and Si nanocrystals. The project is striving to exploit the recent observations of more than 100 enhancement of the 1.54 ?m emission of Er3+ in such materials. Using methods compatible with both Si technology and industrial implementation, SINERGIA will endeavor to optimize the conditions, to explore the systems and to identify the most viable approach to achieve the best material for the WA. With this latter, SINERGIA will incidentally explore the industrial fabrication of fiber amplifiers better than the current Yb co-doped systems.
